Her friend Angela died in a traffic accident when she was age 15. Mitchell was deeply affected by the loss of her friend and composed a song Angel to Angela on her debut album. The song was featured on her 7th Heaven Episode Nothing Endures But Change and in Chicken Soup for Preteen Soul she also talked about her experiences.
